There are 7 belts in karate. The order of obtaining certain belts may vary depending on the style of karate practiced (Shinkyokushin, Shōtōkan, Gōjū Ryu, Wado Ryu, Shito Ryu, etc.).
In ShinKyokushin Karate, the order is as follows: white, orange, blue, yellow, green, brown and black.
Colors and meaning of belts
White belt
Purity and potential: White symbolizes potential and purity. The new karateka is pure because it has no experience and completely ignores the requirements of this art.
The minimum time to move to the next level is between 24 and 30 hours of training; when the karateka has reached half the time required to move to the next level (12 hours) a Kyu will be glued to his belt.
Stability (10th and 9th kyu) The element of the Earth, which means that training should focus on stability.
Orange Belt
By receiving his orange belt, the karateka reaches the 10th kyu. To upgrade to the 9th kyu, a minimum of 17 hours of training is required. The transition to the blue belt is done after at least 35 hours.
Blue Belt
Fluidity and adaptation (8th and 7th kyu) The element of Water, which means that karateka develops an ability to adapt and react fluidly.
By receiving his blue belt, karateka reaches the 8th kyu. To upgrade to the 7th kyu, a minimum of 28 hours of training is required. The transition to the yellow belt is done after at least 55 hours.
Yellow Belt
Affirmation (6th and 7th kyu) The element of Fire. Focus on the hara and feel the energy flowing from this center.
By receiving his yellow belt, karateka reaches the 6th kyu. To upgrade to the 5th kyu, a minimum of 35 hours of training is required. The transition to the green belt is done after at least 70 hours.
Green Belt
Emotionality and sensitivity 9 (4th and 3rd kyu) The element is air and connected to the heart. In the dojo, the green belt focuses particularly on breathing methods.
By receiving his green belt, karateka reaches the 4th kyu. To move to the 3rd kyu, a minimum of 50 hours of training are required. The transition to the brown belt is done after at least 100 hours.
Brown belt
Creativity and practice (2nd and 1st kyu) at this level karateka will develop its own combinations. Karateka should be strong and very comfortable in performing all techniques.
By receiving his brown belt, karateka reaches the 2nd kyu. To upgrade to the 1st kyu, a minimum of 75 hours of training are required. After 1 year and a half as a brown belt, the transition to the black belt is done after at least 150 hours.
Black Belt
The black belt is the most important in the life of a karateka. The black color is strong, it covers all other colors. A black belt who trains a lot will see his belt wear out and become white again. The circle is complete.
- From Shodan to Nidan (1st dan to 2nd dan). At least 1500 hours of training and 5 years minimum.
- From Nidan to Sandan (2nd and 3rd dan) At least 1500 hours of training and 5 years minimum.
- From Sandan to Yondan (3rd and 4th dan) At least 2,000 hours of training and 7 years minimum.
- From Yondan to Godan (4th to 5th dan) A period of 7 to 10 years will be necessary for the transition to the 5th dan in Japan.
